Southeastern Subbuteo League (SSL)
The SSL is a league of Subbuteo Table Soccer players from all over the southeastern United States.  Our homebase is in Durham, NC, but there will be events and meetings at various locations in the region depending on members' needs.

We are a part of the American Subbuteo Association (ASA) which is, in turn, a part of the Federation of International Sports Table Football (FISTF).  Members of the SSL and ASA are eligible to play in all Regional and National ASA-sanctioned tournaments and can earn national and world ranking points.

For more information about the league and membership, email Eric Walton at sesubbuteo@excite.com

An email group will be set up shortly to allow members to easily contact each other for event announcements, game scheduling, trash talking, etc.
League Nights, Tournaments and Events
League Nights:
Members and others interested in the game can arrange league nights, events and friendly matches at will.  When the membership grows large enough in any area, league play can be started with trophies and ranking points.

The first meeting of the SSL was Sunday evening, Oct. 21st with Jonathan Hart making the trip up to Eric Walton's for some introduction to the game, Subbuteo talk and some interesting matches.  After a lengthy acclimation to the new pitch for Jonathan and some rules explanations, the first two matches of the SSL were played.  Learning to play left handed, Walton was held to a zero -zero tie for Hart's first match!  In the second match, Walton opened it up a little with a two goal first half and nothing in the second for a 2-0 finish.  Once Walton is located permanently in Durham, Jonathan is looking forward to avenging the loss.

Future league nights will be held as schedules allow and becoming regular with time.  Everyone is welcome to set up their own matches and dates.

Tournaments and Events:

Canadian Grand Prix and International Open, Apr. 21-22 2001
Eric Walton (SSL) and Gregg Deinhart (WTSL) represented the US well, with each one making it through to the quarterfinals each day.  On Saturday Eric made it only to meet up with Dave Baxter, a highly world ranked player.  Sunday it was Gregg's turn to make it through where he put up a valiant effort, taking the eventual tournament winner to sudden death.

American Grand Prix and International Open, Apr. 28-29 2001
Eric and several other US players from around the country competed in Washington DC at these two events.  Eric did well in both tournaments, making it into the quarterfinals both days.  In getting to the quarters on Sunday, he dealt a vicious loss to the Belgian, Stephane Lambert, who he'd not beaten in any tournament match to that point.  It was the talk of the round and a big step for US Subbuteo to get another player to score an international win.

ASA Mid-Atlantic Regional, Aug. 4 2001
A record number of completely new players showed up for this tournament, making for some interesting first round games and a lot of fun as the vetrans helped to introduce the new players to the game.  Some of the biggest smiles seen during the day were on the faces of the new players as they learned just how great this game can be.
Unfortunately, the day was a bit of a disappointment for SSL member Eric Walton, as he suffered an early round loss and had to struggle to get into the second round.  A bad shooting day was hampered more by a lack of concentration (possibly due to the distraction caused by the participation of his wife, Kate, in her first tournament :) ).

ASA National and MSL Cup, Alexandria VA, Oct. 13-14
These were two great tournaments with vertans and new faces from new areas.  Two three players made their ASA tournament debut, with two making the long drive from Connecticut to attend.

The National was held on Saturday with 9 people and the competition was tight with a large number of shutouts and a shootout in the semifinal with the SSL's own Eric Walton shutting out the WTSL's Mark Palmer in pk's to win 1-1, 2-0.  Walton then played the four-time defending champion, Gregg Deinhart, who handed Eric a beating at 3-0 in a brilliant offensive match.  The full results are linked at the bottom of this page.

The MLS Cup was played with slightly different faces as a couple bowed out and another showed up.  With two groups of four, everything mattered and there was little room for error.  In the first round, the most interesting result was newcomer Massimo Contorso, one of the Connecticut pair, drawing with ASA veteran, Rick Wilcox.  The SSL's Eric Walton only had to draw Wilcox to take first in the group, but Wilcox sought vengance for the tie and handed Walton a devestating 4-0 loss.  Wilcox went on to play Deinhart in the final and won in a close 1-0 match.  Full results are linked at the bottom of this page.

ASA Regional and ASA Indoor National; Durham, NC;Feb. 9-10(tenative)

This is the first in the new season of ASA tournament weekends.  The rest of the schedule is being worked out and will be posted shortly.  This tournament will be hosted by the SSL and will be the first tournament held in the southeast in recent history.  The SSL is going to look to put ourselves on the national map with a great showing at this new ASA fixture.

NOTE: All that's required for an ASA sanctioned tournament is proper notification to all ASA members and 2 participants!  There will be news about upcoming local and regional tournaments in the NC area soon.
